Minutes of Meeting Held October 28, 2006

Master Vern Nelligan opened the District Meeting at 10:00 AM.

A: OPENING PROTOCOL:

B: CONFIRMATION OF TRAVELLING CARDS:

S.K. Romano Mancini, SDM confirmed that all present were duly qualified members.

C: WELCOME BY THE MASTER:

The Master expressed his appreciation for the good turnout of members.

The Master quoted Supreme Master Joseph Schultz reminding the assembly that we are all volunteers who are doing something for the good of each other. He reminded us to be considerate of all who volunteer and be thankful that they are around to help, even the help is modest or for a short time.

D: INTRODUCTION OF HEAD TABLE:

 

The Head Table was introduced as follows:

SK Vern Nelligan District Master, SK Brendan Saunders District Secretary, SK Aurel Chiasson Recruitment Director, Sir Knight Pat Casey FM, SK Jerry Hayes, SK Fran Pulumbarit, District Trustees; Sir Knights Romano Mancini, Iain Kwapien, Thom Hargreaves, District Marshals.

 

E: INTRODUCTION OF DISTRICT MEETING SECRETARY:

 

District Secretary SK Brendan Saunders was recognized as Secretary for the meeting.

31 of the 36 Assemblies were represented at the meeting

 

G: READING OF MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING:

 

The minutes of the meeting held April 29, 2006 were distributed by email or regular mail to all Assemblies on May 3, 2006. Upon motion SK D. McNeil (Assembly 2113) and SK Peter Wouters (Assembly 1981) the minutes were approved as circulated.

 

H: BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES:

 

Business arising from the last meeting was dealt with under unfinished business.

 

 

I: READING OF COMMUNICATIONS

 

1.      Letter dated January 28, 2006 from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops addressed to Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe of the Knights of Columbus with respect to suggested protocol of the 4th Degree. Essentially this letter proposed that Sir Knights remove their Chapeaus when entering the Church and Swords remain sheathed while in the Church. The Master advised that the Drill Manual is currently under review by Supreme pending further clarification on the use of swords

††††††††††† Note: Assemblies are requested to provide their comments on the use of swords in ††††††††††† Church to the Master before November 30, 2006.

2.      Letter from Supreme Master Joseph Shultz with respect to the importance of appearance, uniformity, discipline and execution of drill by Colour Corps.

3.      Letter from Supreme Master with respect to development of a Canadian Flag Manual and Canadian Certificates for Military.

4.      Announcement that Assembly 857 Kingston was the winner of the Patriotic Award in Canada.

5.      Letter from Vice Supreme Master Marcel Wozny requesting Assemblies to get rd of old directory information and request new ones from the State Board if not already received.

6.      Letter from FN Jim Cummings Assembly 2007 with respect to display of flags in churches.

7.      Correspondence with respect to Serra Clubs and Ordinandi Dinner. A Motion stating that 2nd Ontario District participate as a Sponsor for the Ordinandi Dinners ($100 to each of the Toronto and Hamilton) was Proposed by SK Ed Chmielewski, Seconded by SK Domingo Trinidad and Approved by the floor.

 

J: WORKSHOPS AND MASTERíS REPORT/ K: QUESTION PERIOD

The District Marshals and the Faithful Commanders adjourned to a separate area for training and certification.

 

The Master spoke about the importance and duty of Officers to submit reports in a timely manner.

Civic Award applications are should be submitted to the Master by June 30, 2007. All Assemblies should easily qualify for this award and all are encouraged to apply.

 

The Master reminded FNs of the importance to complete forms properly. Form 4 with print copy 10/03 French and 06/05 English are only to be used.

 

Assemblies were reminded that they must maintain their By-Laws current and copies must be provided to the Supreme Advocate and the Supreme Secretary.

 

The Master encouraged Assemblies to work closely with Councils to promote recruiting in the 3rd and 4th Degree.

 

The Master encouraged the use of Certificates of Appreciation.

 

Special Addresses

 

SK Harold Marcotte made a detailed presentation on Assembly financial management and requirements.

SK Jerry Hayes updated the meeting on the 2006 Exemplification. Special recognition was made of Assemblies 2864, 2838, 2113, 2288 and 874. The Exemplification was a financial and fraternal success.

 

SK Aurel Chiasson stated that he is optimistic that we will have at least 200 candidates at the June 2007 Exemplification. He offered a number of tips on recruiting which he described as a year round activity.

The next Exemplification will be held in Niagara Falls June 22, 23 and 24. Bishop Wingle will celebrate Mass. The Honoree is Grant Ertel.

An Exemplification for Clergy will be held at Christ the King Church in Mississauga on Tuesday January 30, 2007. Further details will be sent out before year end. Cost for Priests is $100 and for Deacons $150.

 

SK Romano Mancini Senior District Marshall advised that requests for cards may be sent to SK Romano, The District Secretary or the Master.

 

 

L: UNFINISHED BUSINESS

 

The Master advised that the revised Assembly/Council mapping had been undertaken and a number of changes resulted effective July 1, 2006.Some minor adjustments are required and the mapping will be reviewed in one year.

 

There has been no response from Supreme yet with respect to Certificates for Clergy Anniversaries.

 

The Mass for the Military has been postponed to September 29, 2007.

 

M: NEW BUSINESS

 

A new Assembly is under development in the Hamilton area

 

Faithful Navigators will be invited to Diocesan meetings. FNs are requested to advise their respective Diocesan Chairmen of contact details

 

Assemblies were asked to advise the Master of: (1) Assembly members who also are in the Canadian Armed Forces and (2) any members wounded or killed.

 

The Master announced a number of changes to his staff. He acknowledged the service given by both SK Joe Wintar who served as Trustee and SK Brian Hughes who served as District Marshal for two years. SK Fran Pulumbarit was appointed as Trustee and has assumed responsibility for the Exemplification Booklet. SK Brendan Saunders was appointed as District Marshall.

 

 

SK Peter Wouters Assembly 1981 outlined their To Be a Patriot Program (Both the Essay/Poster Contest and its Remembrance Day School visits) and offered to provide material to assist interested Assemblies. SK Peter also demonstrated a form of rainwear for Colour Corps and volunteered to assist other Assemblies to acquire same at a cost of $100 per set. He may be contacted via email at:

SK Bud Duguay Assembly 2020 advised that the Martyrís Shrine project for this year is new repairs to the stairways in front of the Church. Cost is estimated at $50,000 and all Assemblies are encouraged to contribute. Donations may be made through the Master or directly to the Shrine.

 

SK Bud also outlined a Patriotic Program that has been adopted by a number of Assemblies. The program provides care packages to volunteers of the Grey Simcoe Foresters serving in Afghanistan.

 

The Master provided details of a program out of London to provide grooming kits to soldiers evacuated from Afghanistan.

 

Assemblies agreed to order stoles for their Faithful Friar which contains the insignias of the 3rd and 4th Degree at a cost of $40. The Master will arrange for the order.

 

SK Chris Scatliff Assembly 1981 made a presentation on the Keep Christ in Christmas activities of Marian Council 3881. Chris may be contacted at 416 871 0253 for more information or to order signs.

 

N: GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

There were numerous deaths and illnesses reported to the Meeting.

 

The 50/50 Draw worth $241 was won by SK Jim Nemish Assembly 878.

 

O: NEXT DISTRICT MEETING

 

The next District meeting will take place on April 28, 2007at the same location.
